The Bennett County Middle School students were involved in and enjoyed the “Buffalo Nation” project, brought to them via Zoom by creator, Keith Brave Heart, a local Native American artist. The students viewed videos and learned of Lakota culture while crafting an origami type buffalo. A traditional meal of soup, fry bread and wojapi was prepared by Thelma Shangreau for the culminating event, along with a showcase of their buffalo skulls.
This project was brought to BCMS by a grant from the Change Network/Bush Foundation, which Anita Hicks applied for, Anita’s goal with this project was to increase knowledge of Native American culture, but also to encourage our students to be creative and to build confidence in themselves. Thanks to BCSD, Mr. Pierson, Mr. Alexander, Mrs. Divan, Mrs. Risse, and Mrs. McDonnell for working with this project during their classroom time.
